“You may consult your dreams for self-edification, and for the building up of the mental and spiritual, as well as the financial, self.”
My friend, who is a psychologist, comes to my house. She says, “I must pay you for all those towels you made for me,” and she gives me a cheque. I want the cheque because I need the money, but I had bought the towels; I didn’t make them. I don’t say anything, however, and we talk about other things. Then I notice she has one of the towels with her and wants me to tell her how I had sewn them so well. The towel has the manufacturer’s label on it, which is Cannon. I have to confess, “I didn’t make those, I bought them and they were gifts to you.” Then I tear up her cheque.
I thought it was humorous that my dream used the pun of having the towels named Cannon and that my printer is a Canon brand. I phoned the Canon Support Line and learned that all I needed was a new ink cartridge. I will buy one today and I thanked my dream “friend” for teaching me something about myself that I needed to look at, and change, in order to be a happier, more effective person.
I bought the new cartridge, installed it and the printer works perfectly. This whole experience of being frustrated with the machine, having this dream, and then working on its interpretation has been a very useful and important process for me. Instead of thinking I have to do it all myself and feeling victimized, I now realize that I can seek help from others.
Thinking about this dream and my experience of interpreting it, I began looking at that “poor-me, no-one-helps-me attitude”, and realized that like the towels in my dream, this attitude did not originate with me, but that I’d “bought” it from my parents. I am given the opportunity in the dream to pass the towels off as if I had made them, but in the end I confess that I didn’t. Similarly, I had been trying to get sympathy from others in my waking life by pretending to be a victim. I don’t want the payment for the towels because they are gift. My parents don’t owe me anything so I tore up the cheque.
