I am at a large zoo looking at various animals. I see a Camosen dragon and am delighted that I arrived just in time to watch it feeding. Then I go inside a conservatory building, where there are hundreds of beautiful butterflies flying inside the dome and alighting on the branches. Suddenly, I am in an area of fish tanks. I see one huge tank with angel fish in one side and piranhas in the other, separated by glass. I just hope the inner glass barrier doesn’t break. Across the aisle from the tanks is a huge earthen mound with burrows and trails. On the sign I read moles. I wait to see one, but none appear.
I prepare a small private space in the corner of my bedroom where I place an overturned box covered with a beautiful cloth. On this I place a rock that I picked up on my morning walk; it represents Earth. The next day on my walk I found a feather; it symbolizes air. Then I add a beeswax candle for fire and a small oriental dish filled with water for the water element, as well as to invoke the beneficial Eastern dragon. Each morning for five minutes or so, I sit in front of my little “shrine” and contemplate these primary elements of life as I attempt to see with spiritual eyes and learn from my dream.
Over the past several weeks I find I am better able to acknowledge my anger. I make a deliberate effort not to push my anger down into my body. My anger, symbolized by the Western dragon or separated piranha in my dream, can be allowed to mingle with the other aspects of my character. As a result, these aspects are transformed, as symbolized by my dream butterflies.
When I think about this dream and its interpretation, I am awed by the powerful examples of opposites. I learned I don’t have to be perfectly good all the time and that there is only a thin partition between my “angel” part and my “piranha” part and that both are rightful inhabitants of my personal zoo. I think the central message is that we don’t need to be so determined to separate good emotions from those we perceive as bad ones. Awareness and acceptance of all my emotions will transform and heal my body, as well as give me a greater sense of overall mastery in my emotional life.
